A dental designer is the person who designs prostheses and restorations in dental CAD software using 3D data from an intraoral scanner or a model scan. The file they prepare goes to production by milling or 3D printing.
Designing a crown is more than drawing the shape of a tooth. The designer defines the margin line on the die, maintains the wall thickness the material requires, and adjusts the contacts with adjacent teeth and the occlusion with the opposing jaw. That is why the profession combines knowledge of dental anatomy, occlusion and materials with software skills.

Dental design brings the knowledge of the dental prosthesis laboratory to the screen. Three areas stand out when preparing for this profession.
Training as a dental prosthetic technician or technologist, or laboratory experience, provides the knowledge of anatomy, occlusion and materials on which design decisions are based.
You need to be able to build crown, bridge and implant-supported work from start to finish in dental CAD software such as exocad or 3Shape. Software training and regular practice develop this proficiency.
Build a portfolio from the designs you have completed. Having worked with different indications and materials is the most concrete way to show your skill.
Under the Independent Service Provider Agreement, you provide your own equipment, CAD software licence and internet connection; you are also responsible for the licence being compliant.
A design order can be opened by a clinic or a laboratory; in both cases the job goes through the same workflow. Details for laboratories
You register as a designer as an independent service provider; you enter your T.C. identity and tax details and accept the legal documents.
Your application is reviewed by the administration. Once approved, you can see the job pool and start bidding.
You bid on jobs in the pool; each job comes with its indication, material, tooth numbers and deadline. The clinic sees the bids and chooses one; if it does not choose, the job is assigned by the system.
You prepare the design from the scan files in your own CAD software and upload the delivery files to the order. The design time and the deadline are shown separately on the job screen.
The design is reviewed by an independent expert dentist before it is presented to the clinic. The expert can send it back for revision, approve it conditionally or present it to the clinic.
The clinic approves the design or requests a revision; the clinic has the final say.
If the expert or the clinic requests a revision, the job returns to you and a new round opens. For each round, what was requested, which file you uploaded and how long it took are recorded separately.
As an independent service provider, you set your own working hours and methods; the platform defines the scope of the job, its deadline and its quality criteria. For an exocad designer working from home or a technician using other CAD software, the job’s information, files and correspondence stay within the order.
While you are viewing a job in the pool, patient information is hidden and file downloading is disabled; the expert does not see patient information either. Once you take on the job, you see the patient name. If the clinic has chosen to hide the name, you see only the patient number, and the number is also used in the file names. This mask also applies to printed output.
The parties see each other by identity code. Clinics and experts know you by your designer code; your real name is not shown to the other parties.

The expert compares the indication, material and number of teeth or jaws with the order, reviews the design technically and records the decision with its justification.
The expert and the clinic each rate your design separately at approval; the expert’s rating looks at technical accuracy. The deadline and design clock are recorded for every job.
Badges and the general and monthly league rankings kept for designers appear in your designer panel.
The working relationship and responsibilities are set out in the Independent Service Provider Agreement, and the obligations regarding patient data in the Privacy and Patient Data Undertaking. Expert reviewers, who check designs before the clinic does, work with a separate account. An expert reviewer account is opened through an application and an assessment of professional qualifications.
Yes. The job, files and correspondence run through the platform; you prepare the design on your own computer with your own CAD software. You provide your own equipment, software licence and internet connection, and you set your own working hours. The designer registration form requires a valid T.C. identity number and tax status information.
Yes. You prepare the design with your own licensed CAD software; exocad is one such program. 3D files such as STL, PLY and DCM are uploaded to the order; the exocad HTML scene also opens in the platform’s 3D viewer.
Yes. Under the Independent Service Provider Agreement, you can also serve other clients at the same time. You agree not to share contact details with clinics you meet on the platform for the purpose of doing business outside the platform; nor may you have a job you have taken on done by someone else without the platform’s written approval.
